Maya Visvanathan Killed, Wilder Barela Charged With DUI Following Union Road Crash Near Mill Road
PASO ROBLES, CA (July 19, 2019) – A 25-year-old woman died in an alleged DUI crash along Union Road near Mill Road Saturday.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident unfolded along westbound Union Road around 6:20 p.m. Investigators learned that Maya Lakshima Visvanathan was thrown from the vehicle that crashed into a tree in the 5700 block of Union Road.
Due to the significant impact, the Los Altos female passenger died at the scene.
Wilder Blue Barela, the driver from Campbell, suffered major injuries as a result of the impact. This prompted paramedics to bring him to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.
However, following his release on Tuesday, police subsequently arrested him on suspicion of felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
Per court records, Barela, 31, remains in San Luis Obispo County jail with a bail set to $100,000.
