Matthew Winn Killed in 2-Car Accident on West Stockton Street Near Mill Villa Court
SONORA, CA (December 19, 2019)—A Friday morning head-on crash on West Stockton Street near Mill Villa Court left a Modesto man dead and a woman with severe injuries.
According to Sonora Police Department Officer Scott Mallon, the driver of a black 2016 Nissan Sentra was purportedly driving over speeds of 80 miles per hour as he passed several vehicles by crossing the white solid line.
Around 8:30 a.m., after passing a blind curve, the southbound Nissan veered over the white line on the eastbound side of Stockton Street before overcorrecting into the path of a northbound van.
The car subsequently collided with a white Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools van, pinning him inside his vehicle.
Firefighters and paramedics arrived shortly after to extricate 23-year-old Matthew J. Winn from his significantly damaged Nissan; however, authorities found that he had already died at the scene.
Mallon further added that Winn failed to wear his safety belt.
The 56-year-old Sonora woman, who had no passengers in the van at the time, suffered major injuries, prompting medics to bring her to a hospital.
As a result of the tremendous impact, both vehicles sustained considerable front-end damage and debris littered the area.
