Matthew Diaz Dead, Miguel Cuevas Unharmed in Fatal Skateboard Collision on South Frontage Road Near Hill Street
NIPOMO, CA (January 21, 2019) – A 24-year-old skateboarder was killed Friday night when he was struck by a motorist along South Frontage Road near Hill Street.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at approximately 6:10 p.m. Miguel Cuevas, 30, was driving a 2007 Toyota southbound on South Frontage Road at speeds of about 40 mph. He was unable to see 24-year-old Matthew Diaz, of Nipomo, riding his skateboard northbound in the southbound lanes and struck him.
Diaz was receiving medical treatment when officers arrived but despite these life-saving efforts, the Nipomo skateboarder succumbed to his injuries. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be contributing sources in the incident, but the crash remains under investigation.
