Marlene Lorenzo Killed, Amy Lorenzo Injured After Being Hit by Driver on Broadway Place at West 37th Street
LOS ANGELES, CA (April 5, 2019) – A truck driver fatally struck a young girl and injured her sister Thursday morning at Broadway Place and West 37th Street.
According to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Jeff Lee, Amy Lorenzo and Marlene Lorenzo were struck by the truck as its driver made a northbound turn onto Broadway Place from West 37th Street.
Following the 8 a.m. crash, crews responded and rushed the two girls to a nearby hospital. However, despite life-saving efforts, Marlene, 14, died. Twelve-year-old Amy, however, faces critical injuries.
In the investigation, authorities determined that the two sisters were dragged underneath the truck.
A witness tried signaling the driver’s attention, notifying him to stop. Subsequently, the driver stopped and exited the truck yet only to find two girls underneath.
Per officers, criminal activity doesn’t appear to play a part in the collision. However, investigators are seeking other possible contributing factors like cellphone use.
At this time, family and friends have listed a GoFundMe page to raise funds for the girls and their families.
