Mario Alarcon Escapes Injury Following Fatal Highway 99 Collision Near Westside Boulevard
MERCED COUNTY, CA (November 21, 2018) – The life of a 61-year-old woman was cut short Tuesday night following a two-vehicle rollover crash on Highway 99 near Westside Boulevard.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded to the crash around 7:50 p.m. Arriving crews found an overturned vehicle in the southbound lanes of Highway 99.
Witnesses informed officers that a woman was driving a Ford Escape at speeds of 85 to 90 mph in the left lane behind a Nissan Altima. For unknown reasons, the Ford Escape made an unsafe turn to the left, which caused the Ford to veer off the eastern edge of the road and onto the dirt before rotating its wheels and reentering traffic. Subsequently, the Ford overturned onto its driver’s side in front of the Nissan Altima. The driver of the Altima, identified as 27-year-old Turlock resident Mario Alarcon, was unable to avoid hitting the car and struck the vehicle.
The unidentified driver of the Ford was killed in the collision while Alarcon escaped the crash unscathed.
The left and center southbound lanes of Highway 99 were shut down for two hours as crews investigated the scene.
