Marine Hugh McDowell Dies During Training Accident in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA (May 10, 2019) – A marine died and six others suffered injuries Thursday after a light armored vehicle rolled over during training at Camp Pendleton near Highway 76.
The 1st Marine Division is mourning the loss of 24-year-old 1st Lt. Hugh C. McDowell, Marine Corps officials have announced.
The crash occurred during regularly scheduled battalion training, officials said. The cause of the crash was still under investigation Friday. Six other Marines were treated for non-serious injuries and were in stable condition, officials said.
“We recognize that military operations are inherently dangerous and we take extreme precautions to ensure the safety and welfare of our Marines,” officials said in a statement. “This is a tragic accident and we are heartbroken at the loss of our Marine Corps family. We will do all we can to comfort the family, friends and colleagues of Lt. McDowell.”
McDowell was a platoon commander with the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, according to the news release. He was commissioned in May 2017 and his awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the bereaved family and friends of Hugh McDowell.
