Eureka Woman Identified as Pedestrian Struck and Killed on Highway 101 near Main Street
FORTUNA, CA (August 27, 2019) – Authorities identified 55-year-old Margery Wells of Eureka as the pedestrian struck and killed on Highway 101, Tuesday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened at about 12:58 AM. Witnesses claim that a pedestrian was walking southbound while swinging an object at passing vehicles. A few minutes later, a 1998 Dodge pickup truck hit the pedestrian near Main Street.
The driver, identified as 26-year-old Moshe Pepper of Mad River, called 911 and cooperated with investigators. Unfortunately, Wells suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Meanwhile, Pepper did not sustain injuries.
Investigators ruled out impairment as the cause of the fatal crash. Anyone with information can call the CHP Humboldt Area at (707) 822-5981. Authorities will release additional details to the public once it becomes available.
