Manuel Lopez Fatally Strikes 54-Year-Old Pedestrian in El Centro
EL CENTRO, CA (March 1, 2019) – Early Thursday morning, Manuel Lopez fatally struck a 54-year-old pedestrian in a crash on South 4th Street.
The accident took place around 12:30 a.m., near Desert Garden Drive. Officials responded to the scene after receiving calls about a major-injury collision involving a pedestrian. The victim’s identity has yet to be confirmed, but reports described the pedestrian as a 54-year-old transient and resident of El Centro.
First repsonders found the male victim unconscious and displaying obvious signs of head trauma. Medical personnel arrived soon after and rendered resuscitation efforts that proved no success; as a result, the pedestrian died after succumbing to his injuries.
Lopez struck the northbound pedestrian on 4th Street, in the No. 1 lane. Upon impact, he immediately pulled over and provided first aid to the victim.
Authorities eventually questioned Lopez, seeking to determine the exact events leading to the accident. In their investigation, officials determined that neither alcohol nor drugs contributed to the crash.
Witnesses informed authorities that the victim may have been impaired at the time, as he appeared intoxicated while stumbling into the street. Reports indicate that the pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision.
Investigators are working to determine the ultimate cause of this fatal crash. There has been no updates as to whether or not Lopez faced any criminal charges. No further details have been disclosed at this time.
