67-Year-Old Man Struck by Delivery Van on West Orangeburg Avenue
Modesto, CA (September 25, 2020) – On Thursday, a 67-year-old man in a wheelchair was struck by a van on West Orangeburg Avenue.
Police Lt. Brian Kleiber said the crash happened after 8 a.m., in the 200 block area.
Both the van and the wheelchair were eastbound on Orangeburg Avenue. It’s not uncommon for power wheelchair users to be on the side of a road. They commonly stay on a sidewalk. Where, it can be hard to navigate tight spaces around light posts, fire hydrants, and other obstacles.
The unidentified man in the wheelchair was bleeding profusely from his legs due to the crash. Immediately, emergency medical personnel took the victim to DMC for treatment.
Meanwhile, Kleiber confirmed that tourniquets were applied to both of the victim’s legs.
Furthermore, the van driver did not get injured. He remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation, the lieutenant said.
Authorities are still investigating the crash.
Aim high in steering, i.e. don’t make your steering adjustments based on what is directly in front of you, but rather what is down the road. If the road is winding to the right, for example, look as far into the turn as possible. This will improve your safety and make your turns smoother.
