Male Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Car on Highway 1 in Watsonville
WATSONVILLE, CA (August 5, 2019) – A 28-year-old Salinas man was killed after he was struck by a car Monday evening, in Watsonville.
The crash happened around 9:35 p.m., on southbound Highway 1 near La Selva Beach. Dispatchers arrived to the area shortly after.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a 2012 Toyota Prius, driven by a 40-year-old Gilroy man, was merging onto the southbound lanes near the vista point. There, the Prius struck the pedestrian just south of Mar Monte Avenue.
Paramedics tried to revive the victim, but they were unsuccessful. The man was later pronounced dead at the scene as a result of the impact. The Santa Cruz County coroner’s office will identify him once his family is notified.
The surrounding area was closed off for a brief time while crews worked to clear the wreckage. However, the roadway has since reopened.
It is currently unknown if charges has been filed, as liability has not yet been determined. The incident remains under investigation at this time.
