Pedestrian Killed in El Cajon Accident
EL CAJON, CA (July 29, 2019) – Several vehicles fatally struck a pedestrian on the 8 Freeway near East Main Street Thursday night.
The incident unfolded around 9:30 p.m. Dispatchers received word of the accident, prompting California Highway Patrol officers to respond and begin contacting the man.
Per CHP Officer Travis Garrow, the man left the freeway through a perimeter fence. Officers subsequently tried contacting the pedestrian to get him off the freeway. However, authorities determined that he entered an off-ramp and began walking eastbound in the west traffic lanes.
Due to the growing peril of the situation, officers tried running traffic breaks on the 8 Freeway to slow traffic to a halt; however, a 60-year-old woman in a Nissan Sentra struck the pedestrian in the westbound lane.
Subsequently, the man ran toward the eastbound side, where a 45-year-old man in a Lexus IS 200 sedan and a 22-year-old woman in a Honda Accord struck him.
Not long after, the man died at the scene. All three drivers stayed on site and escaped harm and injury.
