Man Dies in Possible DUI-Related Collision near South Catalina Street in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES, CA (February 21, 2019) – Early Wednesday morning, an unidentified bicyclist was killed in an accident on Wilshire Boulevard near South Catalina Street.
The incident happened around 3:30 a.m. near the Koreatown district, the Los Angeles Police Department stated.
The unidentified bicyclist was said to have been struck by a hit-and-run motorist at first before being hit by a second driver; however, inferring from surveillance footage from the area, that claim was determined to be inaccurate.
Police reviewed the footage and determined that the bicyclist was pedaling back and forth across Wilshire Boulevard before stopping in the street. He was lying down on the road when he was struck by a BMW driver, who dragged him for nearly 30 feet. News reports say the driver did see the man but was unable to avoid hitting him.
The unidentified cyclist, described as a man in his 30s, died at the scene.
Coroner’s officials told authorities they smelled alcohol at the scene but an investigation regarding whether intoxication was an influence is underway.
To the bereaved family and friends of the victim, we would like to wish you our support, thoughts of hope and well-wishes.
