Pedestrian Dies in Long Beach Crash
LONG BEACH, CA (December 26, 2018) – A man in a wheelchair was fatally struck by a vehicle on Atlantic Avenue near East Spring Street Thursday night.
The incident happened a few blocks from Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. The pedestrian – a man in a wheelchair – was attempting to cross the street outside of a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a northbound Ford Escape, driven by a 21-year-old man. The impact cast the victim into the northbound lanes of Atlantic Avenue near 29th Street, while his damaged wheelchair was spotted in another section of the roadway.
Officers arrived and undertook life-saving efforts until Long Beach Fire Department paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital where he died, per officials.
The 21-year-old Long Beach male driver stayed at the scene and was questioned by officers and detectives who do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the wreck. Police are asking the public to contact Det. Sirilo Garcia at 562-570-7355 if they would like to add to this investigation.
