1 Dead and 3 Injured in Atascadero Auto Accident on Highway 101
ATASCADERO, CA (July 6, 2020) – Sunday afternoon, Kyle Leventhal died and 3 others sustained injuries in a rollover crash on Highway 101.
According to reports, the crash happened at about 2:00 p.m. on the northbound lanes of Highway 101 near Del Rio Road offramp.
The CHP revealed that a 2007 Lexus with four occupants traveled toward Del Rio Road on the US 101 freeway. However, the vehicle then veered towards the right shoulder.
The 20-year-old driver, Grant Cosko, made an abrupt left turn to bring back the Lexus into the lanes. However, his maneuver caused a hard left turn, as it went outside the lanes. Afterward, the Lexus overturned on the dirt and grass embankment. It rolled several times until it landed on its roof in the dirt.
After overturning, the vehicle caught fire within minutes. Luckily, the occupants managed to escape the wreckage with the help of some bystanders.
The Atascadero police and firefighters came and extinguished the fire.
The Aftermath of Atascadero Crash
Grant Cosko and passengers, 20-year-olds Adam Joss and Carter Norton suffered minor to moderate injuries.
Unfortunately, the 20-year-old passenger, Kyle Leventhal, died at the crash scene.
Meanwhile, the authorities briefly shut down the northbound lanes of Highway 101 and the Del Rio offramp. The #1 lane of Highway 101 reopened at around 3:54 p.m. Meanwhile, the CHP declared that the freeway fully reopened at 4:22 p.m.
The cause of the crash remains under active investigation. However, the police do not believe that drugs or alcohol played a role.
CHP is currently investigating the cause of the crash. At this time, they do not suspect drugs or alcohol were involved.
