Kourtnie Chavez Charged, Officer Hurt in DUI 2-Car Accident on Highway 303 Near West Waddell Road
SURPRISE, AZ (December 17, 2019)—A Surprise police officer suffered major injuries Saturday in a DUI car collision on Highway 303 near West Waddell Road.
The crash took place around 11:07 p.m. on the northbound side of the highway. Officials say the incident happened when the officer had just wrapped up a traffic stop in the area.
A Hyundai Tucson SUV subsequently crashed into the back of the officer’s car, causing him serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Paramedics transported him to a hospital shortly thereafter.
Kourtnie M. Chavez, of Waddell, Ariz., was identified as the driver of the Hyundai. Authorities booked her into the Fourth Avenue Jail on charges of aggravated assault, endangerment and DUI.
She also suffered major but non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment at a hospital before being released.
