Kevin Vargas Detained Following Fatal Collision on Newlin Avenue Near Wardman Street

 
WHITTIER, CA (February 19, 2019) – A person’s life was cut short Monday when a police chase ended in a fiery two-vehicle crash on Newlin Avenue near Wardman Street.
 
The chase unfolded at approximately 11 a.m. when a Whittier officer noticed a road rage incident ensue near Greenleaf Avenue and Whittier Boulevard; however, as the officer tried to intervene, a man later identified as 34-year-old Kevin Vargas fled the scene in his Kia.
 
The Santa Fe Springs man tried to strike at least three patrol cars to get away, but the chase quickly came to an end when his car crashed into a Ford SUV in the 7200 block of Newlin Avenue.
 
The Kia vehicle burst into flames, but Vargas was able to escape. He tried to flee on foot yet was captured immediately by authorities.
 
The driver of the other vehicle suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead by medical staff at a nearby hospital. The identity was not available.
 
Vargas was booked into jail on suspicion of crimes including assault with deadly weapon and evading police.
