1 Dead in Sacramento Pedestrian Accident on 80 Freeway
SACRAMENTO, CA (January 17, 2020) – A 12-year-old girl died in a pedestrian accident on 80 Freeway near Watt Avenue exit on January 15.
The incident closed down the freeway just before 10:00 p.m.
“It was nighttime, there was no overhead lighting in that particular spot. So, they were just not able to see someone running from the right shoulder in front of them,” CHP Officer Greg Zumstein revealed.
Zumstein also said that the victim, Kendra Czekaj, run after a 16-year-old girl who escaped from the Children’s Receiving Home, a foster care facility that backs up to the Watt Avenue ramp.
“From what I understand, one girl was distraught but we’re still trying to figure out exactly why she was on the roadway,” he said.
The coroner also identified the 12-year-old girl as Kendra Czekaj.
Investigators also revealed that the involved driver remained at the scene and cooperated with them. They also ruled out drugs and alcohol as factors in the collision.
Our deepest regrets and thoughts are with the loved ones of Kendra Czekaj.
