Karin Woodbury Dead, Justice Oates Detained Following Deadly Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident on 44th Avenue Northeast Near 33rd Street Northeast
TACOMA, CA (May 22, 2019) – Police arrested a man following a deadly hit-and-run pedestrian crash on 44th Avenue Northeast near 33rd Street Northeast.
Justice Tatum Oates has been accused of striking 77-year-old Karin Woodbury on May 14.
Around 9:30 p.m., Oates allegedly struck Woodbury and left the scene without stopping to help.
Unfortunately, Woodbury died the next day at a local hospital.
According to court documents, Oates informed investigators that he had been working long hours that night and fell asleep at the wheel. He reportedly woke up after hitting several mailboxes along 44th Avenue Northeast and was unaware that he had struck a person.
The 18-year-old man later learned that he had killed Woodbury after a friend informed him.
Subsequently, Tacoma police arrested Oates after detectives located his 1995 tan Honda Accord parked at his mom’s house. However, the case remains under investigation by detectives.
We would like to take this time to express our condolences to those deeply affected by the loss of Karin Woodbury.
