Justin Smith, Travis Holt, Michael Engelberg and Aurora Wells Hurt After Car Crashes Into Construction Site Zone at Chaney Avenue and Highway 1
CAYUCOS, CA (June 26, 2019) – Four people suffered injuries Tuesday when a car crashed into a construction site zone on Chaney Avenue near Highway 1.
The incident happened around 1:10 p.m. when 81-year-old Michael Engelberg crashed his gray Honda Fit at a speed of 65 mph.
According to a California Highway Patrol news release, the West Hollywood driver thought he saw the Cayucos exit. Instead, the Honda veered toward the intersection of Chaney Avenue and Ocean Boulevard. At the same time, three San Luis Obispo County Public Works water systems employees were working on a water line.
One employee saw the vehicle approaching and escaped in time. However, Engelberg’s Honda struck 35-year-old Justin Smith and 38-year-old Travis Holt.
Smith, of Atascadero, sustained major injuries after being pinned beneath the car. Holt, of Paso Robles, also suffered serious injuries when the impact sent him into the side of a residence. Paramedics rushed both men to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo.
Meanwhile, Engelberg and his 31-year-old Brooklyn, N.Y. passenger, Aurora Wells, sustained minor injuries.
Authorities have yet to determine the ultimate cause and plan to investigate this case further.
