The crash happened around 8:00 p.m. on northbound Highway 3, just south of Guy Covington Drive.
According to the CHP, a 2003 Ford pickup truck was traveling at a high rate of speed. As it approached a curve in the road, it veered off the highway and struck a tree on the shoulder.
As a result, the driver died at the scene. He was identified as 20-year-old Justin Seaman of Eagle Point, Oregon.
Meanwhile, paramedics airlifted four other passengers to Mercy Medical Center. William Hancock, 19, of Eureka, and Otoniel Moreno, 19, of Arcata, suffered major injuries. A 20-year-old Treyvn Mullins of Eureka and Owen Fite, 18, also from Eureka, reported to have moderate injuries.
The highway was closed until around 2:05 a.m. while the rescue operation was being conducted.
Officers say alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
