Jose Lopez Strikes, Injures Bicyclist in Hit-and-Run Crash on East Vernon Avenue Near Compton Avenue
LOS ANGELES, CA (March 29, 2019) – A bicyclist is fighting to survive Thursday’s hit-and-run bicycle accident on East Vernon Avenue near Compton Avenue.
According to a Los Angeles police news release, the bicyclist suffered serious injuries at 5:20 a.m.
The victim was heading east on Vernon Avenue when the driver knocked him off his bike, ejecting him onto the street. However, the driver operating the white 2017 Toyota model with license plate No. 7ZAK929 failed to stop.
Shortly after, paramedics transported the victim to a hospital with severe injuries. Reports identified the victim as a 45-year-old man named Esteban whose last name remains unclear.
As far as the driver, Jose Miguel Mendez Lopez, authorities say he had been running a work errand at the time of the incident. He contacted his boss shortly after and informed her that he was in hiding at an unknown location.
Now, the Los Angeles Police Department is tracking down his whereabouts. The Central Traffic Division station urges the public to call them at 213-833-3713 if they know anything.
