Pilot Jim De Varennes Killed in Single-Engine Plane Crash in Van Nuys

Van Nuys, CA (September 14, 2020) – On Sunday, officials confirmed Jim De Varennes is the 62-year-old pilot killed in a plane crash on North Hayvenhurst Avenue.

Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department said the single-engine accident happened at about 3:04 p.m. Friday in a parking lot in the 6900 block area.

Federal Aviation Administration‘s Ian Gregor said preliminary information confirmed the single-engine Navion B plane took off from Van Nuys Airport. It was heading for Santa Ynez Airport in Santa Barbara County. He added the plane started a fire after crashing.

The LAFD responded to the scene and put out the fire from the crash. No injuries or establishment damage were reported on the ground. However, multiple reports said three vehicles sustained damage.

A witness said the plane made a steep climb, stalled, then nose-dived into the ground.

Authorities pronounced the pilot and the passenger both dead at the scene.

Moreover, the coroner’s office said the name of De Varennes’ female passenger will be released pending notification of next of kin.

“The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate,” Gregor said. “The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will determine the probable cause of the accident.”
