Jeff Dye Struck, Killed by Car on 5 Freeway at Vista Del Lago Road
VENTURA COUNTY, CA (February 4, 2019) – A volunteer member of a sheriff’s search-and-rescue team was fatally struck by a vehicle on the 5 Freeway at Vista Del Lago Road Saturday.
The incident unfolded at approximately 7:30 a.m. during rain-slicked road conditions near Gorman.
Along the northbound lanes of Vista Del Lago Road, Jeff Dye – a volunteer with the Fillmore Mountain Search and Rescue Team – and several others were on their way to Mt. Pinos for a training exercise when they encountered a crash on the freeway. The team stopped to help, according to the sheriff’s department, but as they were assisting the victims, a vehicle plowed into the scene.
SAR Team member, Dye, was killed. News reports say up to nine people were injured.
A stream of powerful storms channeled its way into Southern California Saturday bringing down trees, flooding roadways and urging evacuations where mudslides could occur.
There were no other details regarding the crash. A follow-up investigation of this deadly crash is underway.
