Pedestrian Jean Schweitzer Struck and Killed by Car in Newark
NEWARK, CA (October 24, 2019) — Police identified 64-year-old Jean Schweitzer after a car stuck her on Thornton Avenue on Friday, October 18.
Just before 7:15 p.m., officers and Alameda County Fire Department firefighters received reports of a car accident involving a pedestrian. After that, officials rushed to Thornton Avenue west of Peachtree Avenue, Newark police Capt. Jonathan Arguello said. Officers then discovered that a vehicle attempted to turn westbound onto Thornton Avenue when it struck Schweitzer.
Paramedics arrived at the scene to administer aid to the injured victim. However, despite emergency life-saving measures, Schweitzer died at the scene.
The vehicle’s driver, a 22-year-old Hayward man, remained at the scene. In addition, he cooperated with investigators.
Officers said that neither alcohol nor other substances appear to be factors in the accident. However, police did not release any additional information as the incident remains under investigation at this time.
