DELANO, CA (February 18, 2019) – Five people were killed Saturday evening after their vehicle plowed into a tree just off Highway 99 near Garces Highway.
Reports of the single-vehicle crash came in around 5:00 p.m. According to witnesses, a vehicle described as a Mitsubishi SUV was traveling at speeds of about 70 mph when it veered off the roadway for unknown reasons and struck a large tree head-on after narrowly missing a large street sign.
All five occupants, including two children, were killed in the crash. California Highway Patrol officers are investigating the ultimate cause and whether any of them were wearing their seatbelts.
A family has recently identified the victims as Jalson Laguta, his wife Arlene Laguta and their two children — 4-year-old Caleb Laguta and 7-month-old Joseph Laguta. The family was also accompanied by their family friend, only identified as Sanidad.
