1 Dead in Sunnyvale Multi-Vehicle Accident on Highway 101 near Mathilda Avenue

SUNNYVALE, CA (May 6, 2024) – Early Sunday morning, a horrific multi-vehicle crash on Highway 101 near Mathilda Avenue killed 1 person.

The incident occurred at around 1:27 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Highway 101, past Mathilda Avenue.

Initially, reports said that the crash involved two vehicles. Then, it was later revealed it involved as many as three.

Officers have verified that a gray Mazda CX-5 was involved in striking a pedestrian. However, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. It is uncertain whether the pedestrian was ejected from a vehicle during the initial crash and subsequently struck, or if they had exited a vehicle and were then hit.

Further information regarding the incident has not been promptly provided. To facilitate the investigation, the entire southbound segment of Highway 101 near the crash site was closed to traffic for approximately an hour. This closure allowed the California Highway Patrol (CHP) to thoroughly examine the scene and gather necessary evidence.
