Gilbert Avila Jr. Fatally Struck by Driver on Date Palm Drive Near 10 Freeway
CATHEDRAL CITY, CA (April 22, 2019) – A Banning man was fatally struck by a driver Saturday morning on Date Palm Drive near the 10 Freeway.
According to Cathedral City Police Cmdr. Paul Herrera, the incident unfolded at approximately 2:10 a.m. Authorities are unsure as to why the pedestrian was meandering around the 28400 block of Date Palm Drive at the time of the accident.
Reports say a 28-year-old Desert Hot Springs driver struck Gilbert Avila Jr., 26, as he drove northbound.
Later, police detained the man but released him after ruling out drugs and alcohol as possible factors in the collision.
As a result of the accident, northbound Date Palm Drive was shut down due to investigations and clean up.
