Gary Morin Hospitalized Following Highway 50 Collision Near 80 Freeway
SACRAMENTO, CA (December 13, 2018) – A Caltrans employee is fighting for his life after being hit by a driver and a light pole on Highway 50 near the 80 Freeway Friday morning.
The incident unfolded around 9 a.m. Gary Morin was the Caltrans employee filling potholes along the highway when a driver lost control and struck him before mowing down a light pole, which subsequently toppled onto the Caltrans worker, badly injuring his legs. Detailed reports indicated that the van had struck a semi-truck whilst changing lanes and struck the worker, pole and sound wall.
Morin, who had just undertaken some work in Tahoe before reporting to his morning shift in West Sacramento, was unable to avoid the crash, according to reports. The driver suffered minor injuries.
Morin is now fighting for his life and was put into a medically-induced coma. His loved ones have created a GoFundMe page for him to help raise funds for his hospital expenses. Although he is ineligible for health care since he has been with Caltrans for less than a year, his family is hoping workers compensation well take care of the medical costs.
