GOLETA, CA (December 11, 2018) – A Friday night pedestrian collision turned deadly, claiming the life of a 78-year-old man walking on Highway 101 near Cathedral Oaks Road.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin McCool, Fernando C. Garlejo was walking in the right-hand lane of the highway around 10:45 p.m. when he was hit by a Ford F-250 pickup driven by James A. Gardner.
McCool further added that 51-year-old Gardner, of Granada Hills, was traveling southbound at speeds of about 62 mph when he saw the 78-year-old pedestrian in his path of travel. Gardner was unable to avoid the impending collision and struck the Santa Maria man who was purportedly carrying a fishing rod.
