Ruben Aguirre Arrested after Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash near Palmyrita Avenue
RIVERSIDE, CA (June 1, 2019) – Authorities identified 48-year-old Esteban Carlo Gonzalez of Grand Terrace as the driver killed in a DUI crash.
Authorities reported to the collision around 8:00 PM. Dispatchers arrived to the area near Palmyrita Avenue shortly after.
According to reports, a Honda Odyssey attempted to make a left turn from westbound Palmyrita onto southbound Iowa Avenue. There, the Honda was struck by a northbound Chevrolet Silverado that was running a red light at the time.
Emergency responders rushed Gonzalez to a local hospital, where he later died the next day. Authorities also reported that multiple passengers in the Odyssey sustained injuries; however, their current condition is unclear.
Meanwhile, the 34-year-old Chevrolet driver, identified as Ruben Aguirre of Riverside, fled on foot. Officers later found him hiding nearby in greenery on the side of the road, approximately 100 yards away from the scene.
On June 5, Aguirre pleaded not guilty to one count of second-degree murder, three counts of driving under the influence causing injury, three counts of driving with a blood-alcohol of 0.08 or greater, and one count of hit-and-run causing injury or death.
He currently remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail.
