Erica Kemp, Mariana Silverman, Keilani Waxdeck Hurt in Santa Maria Head-on Accident
SANTA MARIA, CA (April 23, 2019) – Two people died and three others sustained injuries in a head-on crash in Santa Maria on Saturday, April 6.
At around 12:30 p.m., personnel from the California Highway Patrol, Santa Barbara County Fire Department, and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene. They rushed to Highway 166 near Rock Front Ranch, according to fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli.
A 29-year-old Caliente man drove a Honda Accord westbound when it crossed over the center line. After that, the vehicle then slammed into an eastbound Nissan Sentra, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Honda driver died at the scene along with his passenger.
The Nissan Sentra driver identified as 20-year-old Erica Kemp, of San Luis Obispo had minor injuries.Her two passengers — Mariana Silverman, 21, and Keilani Waxdeck, 20, both of San Luis Obispo — suffered severe injuries.
Just after 1 p.m., emergency personnel closed Highway 166 in order for a CalStar medical helicopter to land and pick up one patient.
Paramedics airlifted Waxdeck to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. They also transported Kemp and Silverman to Marian Regional Medical Center.
As of today, Waxdeck and Silverman are still in recovery. The community is raising funds to help pay their medical expenses. Two separate GoFundMe accounts for Waxdeck and Silverman have raised more than $75,000.
