Randy Eiquihua Strikes, Kills Pedestrian Emmett MacCorkle in Montecito
MONTECITO, CA (March 4, 2019) – A 77-year-old pedestrian died Saturday after a delivery driver struck him at 300 Hot Springs Road near Olive Mill Road.
The victim was Emmett Wallace MacCorkle, according to Sgt. John Maxwell of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department.
At 10:25 a.m., a box truck had dropped off its load at the Casa Dorinda campus. The truck was backing up when it struck MacCorkle in the driveway, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver, Randy R. Eiquihua, 55, of Santa Barbara, told investigators he thought he had struck a curb. As a result, Eiquihua then pulled forward, got out, and found the injured man.
The driver was not cited in the accident, according to CHP Officer Jonathan Gutierrez.
Investigators are seeking to determine the events that led to the collision. In addition, they will decide whether the victim was walking behind the truck at the time.
