Emiliano Hernandez Dead, Evaristo Nunez Booked in Jail Following Multi-Car Hit-and-Run Accident at Cottonwood and East Pacheco Roads
BAKERSFIELD, CA (January 10, 2020)— A 9-year-old boy died in a multi-vehicle hit-and-run collision Tuesday afternoon at Cottonwood and East Pacheco roads.
According to reports, the incident happened around 3:34 a.m. and involved three vehicles. Investigations revealed that a southbound vehicle on Cottonwood Road collided with a pickup traveling east on East Pacheco Road. After that, the pickup pulled into the intersection.
Subsequently, a third vehicle, traveling southbound on Cottonwood Road, became involved and collided with the victim’s car. The driver of the third vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with police investigators.
However, the operator of the pickup truck, later identified as Evaristo Perez Nunez, fled the scene. Investigating officers garnered sufficient evidence to demonstrate that Nunez had been the driver of the pickup truck.
Soon after, officers arrived at his place and tried arresting him, albeit with a brief struggle that caused minor injuries to an officer. Police successfully handcuffed the 32-year-old and booked him into Kern County jail for felony hit-and-run causing serious injury, assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest among other charges.
As for the victims in the car—an adult male driver who escaped injury and four juveniles ages 3, 9, 9 and 12—they received appropriate attention from paramedics.
However, one 9-year-old boy, identified as Emiliano Hernandez, died at Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera hours after.
There is no updated news concerning the other injured minors.
