KITTITAS COUNTY, WA (July 22, 2024) – Sunday, 21-year-old Elmer Secenamorales died in a brutal traffic crash on State Route 97.
The incident happened about 20 miles north of Ellensburg.
Saul Avila Valadez, a 27-year-old resident of Guanajuato, Mexico, was traveling northbound on SR97. Gregory Bretz, 61, from Mammoth Lakes, California, and Jared Thayer, 45, from Sequim, Washington, were driving southbound in separate vehicles when Valadez entered the southbound lane, colliding with both Bretz and Thayer.
Valadez had three passengers. Two were unharmed, but the third, Secenamorales, was pronounced dead at the scene. Bretz, who was driving alone, and Thayer, accompanied by 22-year-old Margaret Thayer, were not injured.
Valadez sustained injuries and was treated at Harborview Medical Center. All involved parties, including Secenamorales, were wearing seatbelts.
The Washington State Patrol has indicated that criminal charges may be filed against Valadez. The cause of the crash is under investigation, and it is not yet known if Valadez was under the influence of any substances.
At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.
Due to the limited information available, the authorities continued to investigate the crash.
