Elijah Avila-Mott Dead, Terry Martin Hospitalized Following Head-On Fiery Wreck on 15 Freeway Near Oak Hill Road
OAK HILLS, CA (November 29, 2018) – A wrong-way collision Saturday morning resulted in a head-on fiery wreck, claiming a driver’s life, on the 15 Freeway near Oak Hill Road.
The two-vehicle collision happened around 11:46 a.m. According to the California Highway Patrol, 22-year-old Elijah Steven Avila-Mott, of Diamond Bar, was reportedly driving a silver Subaru – which was initially reported as a blue vehicle by witnesses – southbound at high speeds on the northbound 15 Freeway. As he was traveling on the emergency shoulder of the freeway, he plowed head-on into a semi-trailer towing tanks of gasoline.
Following San Bernardino County Fire and CHP personnel’s arrival, crews found the semi’s cab swallowed up by flames, goading firefighters to immediately extinguish the fire. However, Good Samaritans nearby were able to pull the semi-truck driver – 40-year-old Terry Martin of Riverside – out from the fire before crews arrived. He was soon transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries, officials said.
Although firefighters were able to take down the blaze within 10 minutes, Avila-Mott was unable to survive the devastating crash and died at the scene.
The crash snarled traffic for several hours until 4:30 p.m. as crews including a hazmat unit responded for cleanup due to the leaked fuel. Authorities are still investigating this crash and are asking anyone with insight into this incident to call Officer Stillmunks at the San Bernardino CHP Office at 909-383-4247.
