Deadly Head-On Collision Leaves 2 Dead in El Centro
EL CENTRO, CA (January 9, 2019) – Two women perished at the scene of a head-on wrong-way collision along the 8 Freeway near Highway 115 Monday night.
The 9:40 p.m. crash happened when a Ford Transit van, driven by a 75-year-old South Carolina woman merged onto the 8 Freeway from Highway 115, California Highway Patrol reported.
CHP officers tried getting the attention of the wrong-way driver as she drove in the No. 2 lane, but their efforts fell short because moments later, it collided with an eastbound Honda Pilot, driven by a 30-year-old Calexico woman.
Both women died at the scene of the crash. CHP has confirmed that alcohol did not play a role in the incident but whether drugs were on board won’t be determined until the toxicology report is done.
The identities of the victims will be released once their next of kins have been notified.
