Edith Amezcua Injured in Highway 99 Racing Crash
Modesto, CA (March 16, 2021) – On Sunday, 25-year-old Edith Amezcua of Merced and others were injured in a racing-like crash on Highway 99.
The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. north of Crows Landing Road and Zeff Road.
Apparently, drivers of an Infiniti sedan and a silver BMW sedan were driving recklessly. They were unsafely moving lane to lane and exceeding 100 mph.
The vehicles were coming up behind three vehicles moving roughly side by side.
Vehicles involved were Chevrolet Traverse SUV in the fast lane, a Toyota Camry in the middle lane, and a Nissan sedan in the right lane.
The Infiniti driver, 25-year-old Shaw Conklin from Turlock, attempted to pass the vehicles by splitting the second and third lanes, between the Toyota and the Nissan.
‘
However, he crashed with both of the cars.
Meanwhile, the Camry driver, 27-year-old Ashley Stilwell from Modesto, lost control of her vehicle. She entered the fast lane and crashed with the Traverse.
Afterward, the Traverse struck the center concrete wall. It went across all northbound lanes of traffic. It went off the freeway, overturned several times, and landed on Zeff Road.
The Nissan stopped in the middle lane, while both the Camry and the Infiniti stopped on the right shoulder.
Drive Responsibly To Avoid Accidents
The Traverse driver, Amezcua, sustained a cervical fracture, broken ribs, and a broken left arm. AMR ambulance took her to Doctors Medical Center.
Amezcua’s 11-month-old son, who was riding in the rear middle seat, sustained a small laceration to the back of his head. Her 6-year-old son, sitting to his brother’s right, was not injured in the accident. Both were taken to hospitals as a precaution.
Because they were seat-belted property, they prevented possible serious injuries. The same reason that saved her unborn child from injury.
Moreover, Stilwell and the Nissan driver, 33-year-old Jorge Hernandez of Stockton, were not injured in the accident. So were Hernandez’s passengers, a 29-year-old woman, and a 9-year-old boy.
Meanwhile, Conklin complained of leg and back pain but refused ambulance transport. Officers said he was not found to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
They did not arrest Conklin at the scene. Officers are still investigating the incident.
Please call Officers Rafael or Norseen at the Modesto CHP office at 209-545-7440 if you have further details about the incident.
Always be a responsible driver.
