Motorist Killed and Passenger Injured after Rear-End Crash on San Diego Freeway

BEL AIR, CA (October 8, 2019) – A man lost his life in a rear-end crash on San Diego Freeway, early Tuesday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened near Bel Air Crest Road, at about 4:00 AM. A 2019 Kenworth, driven by 49-year-old Craig Zackery, was traveling at an unsafe speed for stopped traffic conditions.

A short time later, the Kenworth slammed into the rear of a 2014 Dodge Journey that became disabled in the No.4 lane.

Emergency responders pronounced the driver of the Dodge dead at the scene. Authorities withheld the identity of the victim, pending notification of next of kin. Meanwhile, a passenger, identified as a 32-year-old Los Angeles woman, suffered major injuries.

Zackery remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities ruled out alcohol and drugs as factors in the fatal collision. Officers will release additional information once it becomes available.
