Fatal Fiery Accident in Blaine Causes Closure
BLAINE, WA (May 6, 2019) – A driver was killed Thursday morning following a two-vehicle high-speed crash at the Peace Arch Border Crossing and the 5 Freeway.
According to reports, the deadly collision involved a light blue Toyota Sienna van and a black Porsche Cayenne SUV.
Investigators believe the driver of the Porsche crashed into the Toyota Sienna minivan as it traveled at a high rate of speed. As a result of the impact, the van caught on fire at Peace Arch State Park, which joins the Canada and US border.
The unidentified driver perished at the scene and the B.C. Coroner’s Service is working to identify him.
Meanwhile, the male driver of the Porsche – a Washington state resident – suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Police officers subsequently arrested him at the scene to determine if he was attempting to run the border into Canada.
Following the accident, crews closed the border crossing due to investigations and clean up. All northbound traffic was required to exit at Highway 543.
Investigators are continuing their search for the cause of this incident.
