29-year-old Man Detained after Santa Clarita Crash near Monterey Avenue

SANTA CLARITA, CA (May 20, 2020) – Tuesday afternoon, authorities arrested a driver after a high-speed chase near Monterey Avenue.

According to reports, the deputies tried to stop the 29-year-old suspect from Los Angeles for a vehicle code violation at around 5:00 p.m. This incident took place near Boquet Canyon Road and Festividad Drive intersection.

However, when a deputy attempted to talk to the driver, the suspect tried to hit the deputy, public information officer for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s Santa Clarita Valley Station Shirley Miller said.

Afterward, the authorities started the chase near Bouquet Canyon and Vasquez Canyon roads. However, they stopped it after a while because of the high speeds. Miller revealed that despite the suspension of the crash, a department helicopter monitored the suspect until the CHP handled the chase.

The suspect traveled at a speed of over 100 mph from the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway to the Golden State (5) Freeway. He then led the officials through residential areas in Burbank.

As the chase continued, the car’s trunk suddenly opened and some boxes fell out of it. At this time, the authorities weren’t able to determine the contents of the boxes. They were also not sure whether the suspect purposely threw the boxes.

At around 5:45 p.m., the car crashed with a California Highway Patrol vehicle near West Monterey Avenue and North Myers Street. This crash finally ended the pursuit. The officers then arrested the male suspect.

Reports revealed that the suspect stole the Mercedes-Benz SUV in the Camarillo area. The police also revealed that other agencies are investigating the suspect for other crimes, such as grand theft.

Meanwhile, the officials clarified that the deputy didn’t sustain an injury in the attempted assault. The incident also didn’t cause injuries to any civilians.

Speeding and reckless driving can lead to a car crash. Always follow safety precautions such as following speed limits and keeping a safe distance from other vehicles. This way, you can ensure your safety and the safety of surrounding vehicles, motorists, and pedestrians.
