Diego Barragan and Danyell Williams Dies in Possible DUI Wrong-Way Collision on 5 Freeway Near Highway 14
SYLMAR, CA (December 31, 2018) – Three people were killed early Friday in a wrong-way possible DUI crash on the 5 Freeway near Highway 14.
The wrong-way collision involved three vehicles around 3:30 a.m. on the northbound 5 Freeway transition. California Highway Patrol investigators arrived on scene and shut down the transition road to Highway 14 to determine the events that led to the crash.
Investigators believe that a male adult driver and his 49-year-old male passenger, believed to be from Long Beach, were traveling southbound on the 5 North Freeway in a 1998 Honda Accord. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Diego Barragan was heading northbound toward Highway 14 in a 2017 Ford Mustang while 24-year-old Danyell Williams was heading in the same direction in a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu.
Not too long after, the Honda Accord collided into Barragan’s Ford Mustang sending it in the opposite direction and crashing into Williams’ Chevrolet.
Both occupants of the Honda suffered fatal injuries, as well as an 18-year-old Palmdale woman who was riding as a passenger in the Mustang. She reportedly passed away at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills after having suffered major injuries.
Barragan, of Palmdale, suffered major injuries and Williams, of Palmdale, suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital a short time later.
Authorities believe intoxicated driving might have played a role in the crash and are seeking more information on this.
