Deputy S. Hurd Suffers Injuries After Suspect Hits Patrol Car at 15 Freeway and Gopher Canyon Road
VISTA, CA (July 9, 2019) – A San Diego sheriff’s deputy suffered minor injuries in a police chase crash at the 15 Freeway and Gopher Canyon Road Sunday.
The incident unfolded around 10:44 p.m. when Deputy S. Hurd saw a northbound Nissan Pathfinder on Center City Parkway without its lights turned on.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Hank Lebitski, Hurd tried making a traffic stop at Champagne Boulevard near Mountain Meadow Road. The suspect reportedly stopped briefly but took off in the vehicle at speeds of 90 mph.
From there, the suspect made a westbound turn on to Gopher Canyon Road and attempted a U-turn by entering the 15 South Freeway before making another U-turn from the far-left lane.
However, the suspect’s vehicle deliberately ran into the rear passenger door of Hurd’s patrol car, leaving it disabled.
The Pathfinder fled following the impact. However, officials located the vehicle at the Lawrence Welk Resort and a suspect was brought into custody; however, the actual driver remains at large.
Hurd suffered minor injuries and sought treatment at Palomar Medical Center after complaining of pain.
If a law enforcement officer is trying to make a traffic stop, it is best to obey the law. Disobeying deputies by causing a pursuit can put you and others in danger on the road.
