Dean Bednarczyk in Custody Following DUI 2-Car Crash on 5 Freeway Near Manchester Avenue
CARDIFF, CA (March 11, 2019) – A two-vehicle DUI crash on the 5 Freeway near Manchester Avenue left a Florida resident dead early Friday.
The deadly accident happened around 1:15 a.m. when a 2008 Nissan Frontier careened off the roadway of the northbound freeway and struck a 2018 Hyundai Elantra sedan parked on the right-hand shoulder.
According to California Highway Patrol public affairs Officer Mark Latulippe, the incident ended the life of a 72-year-old Florida resident, whose identity hasn’t been released. Paramedics brought the victim to Scripps Memorial Hospital.
Police brought Dean Bednarczyk of Oceanside – the 42-year-old driver of the Nissan – in for custody on suspicion of drunk driving. He sustained fractured ribs and other injuries and received medical care at Scripps Memorial Hospital.
Authorities are investigating why the victim’s car was parked on the shoulder.
