80-Year-Old Man Dead in Ojai Pedestrian Accident near Grand Avenue and Lion Street
OJAI, CA (May 1, 2024) – Saturday afternoon, 80-year-old David Whalen died in a horrific mobility scooter crash near Grand Avenue.
The incident happened at about 3:40 p.m. near Grand Avenue and Lion Street in Ojai.
Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Rob Yoos disclosed that at the time of the incident, the scooter rider, later identified as Whalen, sustained a head injury and visible abrasions to his arms.
Although initially not deemed life-threatening, due to Whalen’s age and as a precautionary measure, Sheriff’s Copter 9 transported him from Ojai to Ventura County Medical Center. However, it was later revealed that the victim died of his injuries.
In addition to the helicopter response, sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene. As the sheriff’s office is contracted to provide police services in Ojai, they oversee such incidents.
Sgt. Greg Cadman confirmed on Tuesday that the crash investigation is still ongoing. The driver of the vehicle involved stopped and cooperated with deputies. Furthermore, drugs and alcohol were ruled out as factors in the incident.
While no citations have been issued thus far, Cadman stated it remains a possibility pending the outcome of the investigation.
At this time, the circumstances that led to the crash remained unclear. Once additional details become available, the public will be notified.
Due to the limited information available, the authorities continued to investigate the crash.
