Darion Coleman Killed, Eleazar Garcia in Custody Following Hit-and-Run Crash on Cottonwood Avenue Near Elsworth Street
MORENO VALLEY, CA (February 22, 2019) – The 14-year-old boy who was struck by a hit-and-run driver on Cottonwood Avenue near Elsworth Street died Monday night.
Darion Coleman was reportedly on life support following Saturday evening’s hit-and-run crash. Coleman was walking in the 22600 block of Cottonwood Avenue around 6:30 p.m. when he was struck by a 2000 Cadillac Escalade SUV that failed to stop.
The 14-year-old was quickly taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley but after having been on life support for several days, the child died at 10:28 p.m. Monday.
Eleazar Arevalo Garcia, 33, of Moreno Valley, was arrested just hours before his death and booked into Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in great bodily injury.
Authorities were able to piece together fragments of the crash to determine the model of the vehicle involved. The Cadillac Escalade was later found in the 13400 block of Moreno Way with front-end damage that was congruent with the hit-and-run incident.
Authorities are reviewing the case to determine the circumstances.
