OROVILLE, CA (January 23, 2019) – A 20-year-old driver was killed Sunday in a head-on crash on Highway 70 near Cox Lane.
The fatal wreck not only left Crystal Haight‘s family in mourning but sent Crystal Smith, Steve McCrory and Cynthia McCrory to nearby hospitals.
According to California Highway Patrol, the incident happened around 6:30 p.m. just south of Cox Lane. Witnesses informed authorities that a white car was speeding northbound at speeds of about 90 mph. That speeding driver entered a right-hand curve on the roadway and lost control, striking a southbound vehicle head-on.
Haight was determined to be the driver in the speeding vehicle. The Marysville woman died at the scene, and her 18-year-old passenger, identified as Crystal Smith, suffered a broken arm and leg while Steve and Cynthia McCrory were reportedly in critical condition. Steve suffered a shattered pelvis and facial fractures while his wife sustained broken ribs and internal bleeding.
CHP Officer Ryan Lambert said multiple factors played a role in the crash including speed and inclement weather.
The CHP is working to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role.
