17-Year-Old Dead, Several Others Seriously Hurt in Multi-Vehicle Wreck in Costa Mesa
COSTA MESA, CA (November 28, 2018) – A 17-year-old San Diego boy was killed, and several others were injured early Thursday following a multi-vehicle crash on the 405 Freeway near Harbor Boulevard.
According to authorities, the crash happened around 2 a.m. on the southbound side of the 405 Freeway. Investigators believe a Fiat 500, driven by an 18-year-old man, collided with another vehicle that was stalled on the freeway from a previous crash.
The Fiat driver was ejected from the vehicle due to the brute impact and suffered major injuries. An 18-year-old male passenger in the Fiat exited the vehicle and walked to the right shoulder of the freeway but two other passengers – an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy – were still inside.
While the Fiat was facing in the wrong direction with its lights no longer operational, a 63-year-old Menifee man behind the wheel of a Freightliner big rig approached it and was unable to avoid striking the Fiat.
The Freightliner and Fiat collided, killing the 17-year-old passenger at the scene. The 18-year-old passenger still left inside the vehicle suffered major injuries. Per CHP, one vehicle caught on fire.
