Chevrolet Driver Dies in Vehicle Crash on Highway 99 [Merced County, CA]

Merced County, CA (October 18, 2024) – A 60-year-old driver from Delhi was killed in a vehicle crash on Highway 99 Thursday night.

It was about 7:01 p.m. on October 12 when the fatal crash happened on Highway 99 southbound off-ramp at Shanks Road

CHP says on Oct. 12 at around 7:01 p.m. they were advised of a traffic crash involving two vehicles in the area of Highway

Investigators said a 26-year-old from Sacramento was driving a 2013 Hyundai on the highway and exited at the Shanks Road off-ramp. The Hyundai driver then stopped at the posted stop sign and limit line.

At the same time, the Delhi man was driving a 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck and approached the intersection at 50 mph.

Troopers said the Hyundai driver failed to yield the right of way and drove into the intersection into the path of the Chevrolet.

As a result, the Chevrolet collided head-on with the Hyundai. Both vehicles traveled in a southwest direction and crashed onto a metal guardrail located at the south shoulder of Shanks Road.

The driver from Sacramento was able to exit his vehicle but the Delhi man remained in his pickup truck.

Rescuers provided life-saving measures on the 60-year-old driver and transported him to an area hospital. He died on October 17.

The 26-year-old driver incurred minor injuries and stayed at the crash scene.

Moreover, investigators said the intersection does not have posted stop signs for westbound and eastbound traffic.

CHP officers said drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the Highway 99 head-on crash.
