Chanel Garcia Killed, Christopher Johnstone Arrested in Beach Boulevard DUI Crash
Huntington Beach, CA (June 16, 2021) – On June 4, 26-year-old Chanel Garcia of Newport Beach died, while police arrested 26-year-old Costa Mesa man Christopher Johnstone, in a DUI crash on Beach Boulevard.
The accident took place before 6 p.m., north of Liberty Drive.
Officers said Johnstone was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe on Memorial Day when the SUV crashed with a 1975 Honda motorcycle .
The motorcycle rider, Garcia was taken in critical condition to an area hospital, where she later lost her life.
Reports said Johnstone was driving behind the motorcycle driven by Garcia when she slowed for a traffic signal and was rear-ended by the Tahoe.
Meanwhile, officers said Johnstone was charged with driving under the influence of a drug causing injury.
He was arraigned Tuesday on an upgraded charge after the victim died June 4. Then, he was ordered to return to court Monday for a preliminary hearing in the West Justice Center in Westminster.
Moreover, Johnston still faces the charge with a sentencing enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury as well as misdemeanor counts of possession of a controlled substance and destroying or concealing evidence.
