Celestina Roman Killed, George Wasley, Emily Fortier, Neil Crandall, Brooke Norton, Jang Wang, Margarita Roman and Alberto Roman Injured in 82 Freeway Collision Near Milepost 21
YAKIMA, WA (February 8, 2019) – An 85-year-old woman was killed in a six-vehicle pileup on the 82 Freeway near Milepost 21 Monday afternoon.
Celestina C. Roman, of Selah, was identified as the fatal victim in the crash.
All cars were said to be traveling eastbound around 2:45 p.m. during Monday’s snowstorm, according to the Washington State Patrol. The patrol said a 2007 Freightliner tractor-trailer lost control and struck a 2008 Mazda 3, pushing the Mazda into the path of a third vehicle – a 2004 Acura MDX. After the Mazda and Acura crashed, the Acura was sent into a fourth vehicle – a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan – with all four vehicles and debris scattering the eastbound lanes of the freeway.
Shortly after, a 2016 Subaru Outback attempted to dodge the debris, but an oncoming 2017 Chevrolet Equinox struck the tractor-trailer and the Subaru.
George P. Wasley, 43, of Yakima was behind the wheel of the Freightliner while Emily R. Fortier, 19, of Selah was piloting the Mazda. Neil R. Crandall, 70, of Port Ludlow was steering the Acura and Brooke M. Norton, 37, of Lacey was operating the Dodge Grand Caravan. Jang Y. Wang, 64, of Richland was identified as the driver of the Subaru while Alberto A. Roman, 60, of Selah was the driver of the Equinox. Margarita Roma, 56, of Selah was another passenger in the Equinox and was brought to Astria Regional Medical Center due to her injuries.
Other occupants involved who escaped injury were 52-year-old David S. Lamb, of Yakima; 25-year-old Baovy N. Nguyen, of Ellensburg; 37-year-old Carly M. Galvan, of Tacoma; 62-year-old Yu Y. Wang, of Richland; and 57-year-old Chu-Mei Peng, of Richland.
Authorities are investigating this crash further to determine the ultimate cause.
